Ever wondered how a newspaper is produced? Read on:
A newspaper generally consists of news, views, and advertisements.
First the news is gathered by reporters/correspondents, working
either directly for the publications or news agencies, which sell
Their reports to the papers, and sent to the paper’s New Desk
(ND) – Either directly or routed through the Reporting Desk (RD).
The ND edits all the reports to use to make them error – free and
readable.
Since advertisements are the main source of revenue for any
Paper, Priority is naturally given to them. Thus, the major
Chunk of available space in a paper is given over to
Advertisements and the remaining space is filled with news.
Since it is impossible to accommodate all the day’s news, which is
Generated from all over the world, the ND selects which it thinks
Relevant or of interest. To the paper’s readers and discards the rest.
The next step is to decide which news will go on which page. Here
The top Priority is given to Page 1-or the front page. All the
Important News, be it from the city (local news), state, world,
Business or sports will be accommodated here. The rest of
The news will go to the relevant sections of the paper.
The display of various news items on Different pages depends
on their importance Photographs and other visual aids like
graphs, etc., in a similar way. Apart from news a paper also has
articles/feature, which are carried on the editorial page and other
special pages. Apart from the articles, the editorial page also has
editorials(one to three), letters to the Editor and sometimes a
cartoon, etc.
Once the advertisement department’s job of placing the ads is
Over and the ND is through with its part (selecting, editing and
Displaying the news, photos, etc. The pages are proof read and
Special films and positives are made. Then these positives are
Superimposed on chemical-coated plates and processed
to transfer the words and images on to the plates.
Next, the pliable plates are sent to the press where they are fitted
On to the Cylinders of the printing machine over which ink is
Injected and newsprint passes. Thus, all the impressions on
Plate are Printed on the newsprint. The Cylinders are so fixed
And the newsprint is passed over them in such a manner that
The pages are automatically Inserted in the final output as per
their numbers. The paper is then automatically cut and folded,
giving out the ready-to-read newspaper.
